Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to erupt. In many cases there is insufficient room at the back of the jaws for wisdom teeth to erupt through the gums, thus resulting in the teeth becoming impacted. If this occurs, you could experience problems such as pain and swelling in the tissue surrounding the tooth due to infection. Antibiotics may be needed to help reduce the infection.
Sometimes, wisdom teeth can cause problems with crowding of the teeth, especially after orthodontic work has been carried out. The pressure exerted by the impacted teeth may cause other teeth to be pushed out of their position. Your orthodontist will usually advise you in this respect.
